A Midsummer NIght's Dream

the beginning of a tradition

Drunk Shakespeare started in 2019 with an inspired production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, providing SLC theatergoers with a fresh and modern approach to experience Shakespeare with drinks in hand, infused with classic 80’s hits and pop references. The production premiered in August of that year on the original stage of The Garten.

One night after a rousing game of D&D Scott, Madman and myself started joking about “Drunk History” and how funny it would be to do a “Drunk Shakespeare”. We laughed, and came up with crazy ideas of actors progressively getting more and more drunk trying to recite Shakespearean rhymes, and mixing up what play they were in. It was a joke, a silly fabrication... Until Scott texted to inform us that Dented Brick Distillery was on board for helping make this happen! After addressing safety concerns, the idea was tweaked and turned into this amazing 80’s themed version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream; full of sex, drugs and rock and roll. Inspired by fashion, music, and pop culture from the 1980’s I’m so excited to present our show to you. I adore every single person that steps onto this stage, and I hope you will too. Thank you to everyone who has helped us out to make this happen. So, without further adieu, "Catch you later, navigator!"” - Carleigh-Jo Naylor, director's note 2019
