OUR STORY

“What initially drew me to Macbitches was my deep love for Macbeth, the horror genre in general, and metafiction storytelling in particular. So when I read this script- which is a metafiction, dark comedy, and contemporary adaptation of Macbeth, I was absolutely hooked. On the surface, this show is a fun thriller that feels almost like a cross of Macbeth and Mean Girls. At its core though, this story scrutinizes the female experience in the world of entertainment. It examines internalized misogyny, explores how patriarchal theater grooming forces women to fight one another for the few “good” roles available, and interrogates the abusive, male-dominated power dynamics of collegiate drama programs. I really feel this story is a great way to show women in theater that they are not alone and that things do not have to; nor should they continue the way they are. I knew I wanted to really highlight the depth at which these characters feel and give a physical representation of how the burdens we carry alone can affect us. I hope that audiences take the message that talent does not excuse horrific interpersonal behavior, the approval of those in positions of power does not dictate one’s self worth, and, as stated in Macbeth (Act V, Scene 1): “What’s done cannot be undone.”” - Stina Madriaga-Stone
