“Heathers: The Musical strikes a bold balance between dark comedy and social commentary, taking us on a whirlwind ride through the high-stakes world of adolescent angst and the dangerous allure of popularity. Based on the cult classic film, it explores themes of identity, acceptance, and the consequences of toxic high school culture. At its core, Heathers tells the story of Veronica, who navigates the pressures of conformity while being drawn into a web of power, violence, and betrayal. The musical confronts the harsh realities of bullying and the alienation many young people face, inviting audiences to reflect on the systems that perpetuate these issues. As a mother to a high school and middle school student, it hits close to home. It doesn’t shy away from the darker side of adolescence—the pressures to fit in, the cruelty of social hierarchies, and the painful alienation that so many young people face. Through characters like JD, we examine the seductive nature of rebellion and the potential for destruction when empathy is absent. This production blends humor with horror, creating a satire that resonates not only in the halls of high school but in the adult world as well. Yet, despite the darkness, Heathers is also full of humor—sharp, irreverent, and unafraid to poke fun at the very things it critiques. This balance of humor and horror is what makes the show so uniquely powerful. It’s a satire of high school life, but it’s also a mirror held up to the adult world, where the same patterns of bullying, exclusion, and power struggles continue to play out in more insidious ways. Through this production, I hope to invite the audience into a conversation about the very real struggles of our time: mental health, bullying, identity, and the pressure to conform. We may laugh, we may cringe, and we may even feel uncomfortable at times, but I believe this discomfort is exactly what makes Heathers such a relevant and necessary story to tell. As we bring this show to life, I invite you to sit with these themes, reflect on the truths they reveal, and perhaps even ask yourself: Who are we becoming in this culture? And what are we willing to do to change it?”
